Legal awareness- The centres conduct legal awareness programmes through village visits, awareness camps and a media van. Each district centre visits on average 15 villages and conducts three awareness camps in a month. |

Free legal services- Each centre provides free legal services to underprivileged sections. Between 2001 and 2002, CSJ handled 1800 cases of which 80 per cent were settled out of court or through arbitration. |

Public advocacy- The centres contribute to ongoing campaigns such as the national campaign on Dalit human rights (NCDHR), the campaign to set up a state human rights commission, and a campaign for the implementation of the 73rd amendment of the Indian constitution. The centres also use media and local/folk artists as a strategy to highlight human rights issues. |

Legal research- Each law centre carries out research on an issue pertinent to its specific area ranging from prisoner’s rights and tribal land alienation to police atrocities and other matters. |

Strategic engagement with stakeholders- Each district identifies areas in which to involve stakeholders such as the bar, the judiciary, academic institutions, media, etc. Each district centre then makes four visits every month to these stake-holders. |

Investigation of human right violations- The districts identify areas of gross human right violations and then pro-actively respond by effectively using legal and quasi-legal machinery. At least seven investigations into human rights violations are carried out by a district centre each year. |
